Molly is still alive! Yes, I am really cheering! Today marks 4 months my little one has had this fish. I wake up every morning and run to her bowl to make sure she is still alive before my daughter wakes up. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect, honestly. Through a little research, I read betta fish have a life expectancy of 3-5 years. I wish I would have read this before. It’s making me feel little more confident that ol Molly girl is gonna be okay around these parts.
Having Molly has taught my young daughter awesome life experience. She has become more nurturing, even putting the fish before herself and won’t eat breakfast until she feeds her fish. She also knows Molly needs to eat before she goes to bed, so she is becoming more responsible as well.
Self-thinking is my favorite thing she has learned. Molly is in this small bow, so to keep her healthy, her water needs to be changed and her bowl cleaned every 3 to 4 days. My daughter is able to look at the water and say, “Mom, Molly’s water needs to be changed today or tomorrow.” With my assistance, she takes the lead on properly caring for her fish!
So, while at one time I was totally in fear for this fish’s life, today I am celebrating it and the relationship between Molly and my daughter. Now, my daughter is asking for a cat… The hard conversation was explaining the cat and Molly may be less than best friends, like she hopes. LOL.
The Molly Chronicles to be continued….
